WestJet Signs Multi-Billion-Dollar Maintenance Deal with Lufthansa Technik

On February 13, 2025, WestJet announced a landmark 15-year, multi-billion-dollar agreement with Lufthansa Technik for exclusive maintenance of its CFM LEAP-1B engines, the largest contract in the airline’s history.

The deal will see Lufthansa Technik establish a dedicated engine repair facility in Calgary, the first of its kind in Canada. Slated to open in 2027, the site will house a state-of-the-art test cell and provide up to 160 jobs. While quick-turn maintenance will take place in Calgary, full engine overhauls will continue in Germany and Poland.

“This contract brings critical engine repairs home, enhancing efficiency and cost certainty,” said WestJet CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech. Lufthansa Technik CEO Soeren Stark called it one of the most significant MRO contracts for LEAP engines worldwide.

Backed by the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta, and other key stakeholders, the initiative includes $120 million in infrastructure investment. It solidifies Calgary’s position as a growing aerospace hub and underscores WestJet’s commitment to regional economic development.
