The QEII Halifax Infirmary expansion has officially entered its main construction phase, marking a significant milestone in Nova Scotia's largest healthcare infrastructure project to date. The centerpiece of this $7.4 billion initiative is a 14-story acute care tower that will house 216 inpatient beds, 16 operating rooms, a 48-bed intensive care unit, and an emergency department nearly twice the size of the current one. The project also includes state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging facilities, upgraded laboratories, and additional treatment spaces.
The tower is expected to reach substantial completion by fall 2030 and become fully operational by fall 2031. This expansion is a key component of the province's "More, Faster: The Action for Health Build" plan, aiming to enhance healthcare services for Nova Scotians. Once completed, the new tower will facilitate the relocation of services from the aging Victoria General Hospital to the modernized Halifax Infirmary site, thereby improving access to care and supporting the recruitment and retention of healthcare professionals.
