The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) is undertaking a multi-year redevelopment of its main-campus student centre in Calgary, Alberta, now known as the Taylor Family Campus Centre, with construction costs estimated at approximately $180 million. The project, launched in August 2022 and originally scoped as a roughly four-year program, replaces SAIT's prior campus centre, which had reached the end of its useful life and would have required renovations exceeding sixty-five percent of its existing value. Decommissioning and a sustainable demolition program ran from July 2022 over an 18-month period, achieving approximately ninety-five percent waste diversion from landfill in partnership with Green Standards. Subsurface work commenced in spring 2024 following a ceremonial groundbreaking, with the new facility scheduled to open in late 2027. The new building will house a triple gym and arena, varsity team rooms, athletic therapy facilities, teaching space for the School of Health and Public Safety, a new Welcome Centre, a running and walking track, fitness studios, spectator bleachers, a campus pub and restaurant, and additional student-focused spaces designed around universal accessibility and sustainable design principles. The design-build team includes Bird Construction Inc. as general contractor, GEC Architecture as designer, and Altus Group on project management. Chandos Construction handled decommissioning and demolition. Funding sources include a $30 million donation from the Taylor Family Foundation and a $30 million capital investment from the Government of Alberta, with the balance funded from SAIT and additional sources.
