OPGC acquires Smooth Rock Falls hydroelectric station with credit facilities provided by The Canada Life Assurance Company

In May 2026, Orillia Power Generation Corporation (OPGC), a municipally owned independent power producer based in Orillia, Ontario, completed the acquisition of a hydroelectric generating station located on the Mattagami River in the town of Smooth Rock Falls, Ontario. The station is a run-of-river facility connected via a main output transformer to the 115 kV transmission grid, with power sold under a long-term power purchase agreement with Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The arch-gravity dam is 146 metres long and 10.7 metres high and controls a drainage basin of approximately 10,000 square kilometres; the powerhouse contains two vertical Francis turbine units, each rated at approximately 4.8 MW. Reported total installed capacity is 9.6 MW gross, with the facility characterized as a 7.4 MW project in transaction documents, reflecting net or contracted output. The acquisition was financed through credit facilities established by The Canada Life Assurance Company to fund the acquisition and the long-term operation of the project. Following closing, OPGC's generating fleet now comprises seven hydroelectric stations and seven roof-top solar sites across Ontario; Smooth Rock Falls is OPGC's northernmost facility and the only one situated in the Arctic watershed, providing geographic diversification from its six existing facilities in the Atlantic watershed.
