Northern Super League awards seventh franchise to Winnipeg (first expansion club)

The Northern Super League (NSL), Canada's professional women's soccer league, announced on July 14, 2026 that Winnipeg, Manitoba, has been awarded the league's seventh franchise, marking the NSL's first-ever expansion and its first club in the Prairies. The club is scheduled to begin play in the 2027 season and is co-founded by Winnipeg native and former Canadian international Desiree Scott (Vice President, Community & Player Experience) and Rob Gale (Chief Sporting Officer), former manager of the now-defunct Valour FC. According to public reporting, the club will be owned mostly by the league, with an independent management team running operations and a local minority ownership group holding a roughly 30% stake composed of community partners and local private investors; further partners were still being sought at announcement. The expansion follows a private-equity investment into the league by APEX, an athlete-backed international sports investment firm — reported variously as roughly C$20 million for a minority stake (valuing the league at about C$85 million), with an option to increase to about C$30 million. The club's name, crest, and home venue were not confirmed at announcement, though the team is anticipated to play at the Ralph Cantafio Soccer Complex in Winnipeg. The move takes the league from a six-team to a seven-team structure, with an eighth club targeted for 2028.
