In July 2026, Swiss energy services provider and electricity producer Alpiq completed the acquisition of a 90 percent stake in Harmony Energy Limited, a pan-European developer and operator of battery energy storage systems (BESS) headquartered in North Yorkshire, UK. The transaction was announced on July 9, 2026, strengthening Alpiq's flexibility solutions by adding a high-quality development platform and a multi-gigawatt pipeline of battery storage projects across key European markets, and establishing Alpiq as one of the leading BESS players in Europe. The acquisition brings approximately 400MW of under-construction assets into Alpiq's portfolio, including a UK asset expected to connect to the grid as early as Q3 2026.
Harmony Energy, founded in the UK in 2010, has delivered over 700 MW of operational capacity across 17 UK sites and one in France, with a further pipeline exceeding 12 GW. Alpiq and Harmony had previously partnered on two prior BESS project sales — a site in Oise, France (November 2024) and the 100MW Cheviré facility (January 2026).
Following completion, Harmony Energy will continue to operate as an independent company under its own brand, retaining its team, entrepreneurial culture and operating model, with co-founder Peter Kavanagh remaining as CEO and retaining a 10% shareholding. Christoph Bellin, Head of BESS at Alpiq, will join Harmony Energy's management board while continuing in his role at Alpiq.
