1Password acquires Apono to expand identity and AI-access governance capabilities

Toronto-based 1Password, officially AgileBits Inc., announced on June 15, 2026 that it had acquired Apono, a just-in-time access governance company, to expand 1Password’s identity security platform beyond credential protection into runtime access control. Apono’s platform is built around Zero Standing Privilege, granting access only when needed, limiting access to the task at hand, automatically revoking access when work is complete, and maintaining an audit trail. 1Password said the acquisition will support its Unified Access platform and complement its Credential Broker product, which keeps credentials in 1Password’s vault and releases approved credentials, tokens, or federated access only to verified requesters at the point of need.
