AMD to acquire Taalas

AMD reached a definitive agreement to acquire Taalas, a Toronto-based pioneer in specialized AI inference silicon, in a transaction announced on 6 August 2026. Financial terms were not disclosed. Founded in 2023 and led by co-founder and chief executive officer Ljubisa Bajic, a former AMD executive and former Tenstorrent chief executive, Taalas builds model-specific integrated circuits that etch a model's weights and dataflow directly into transistors rather than shuttling them between compute and high-bandwidth memory. Its first public product, the HC1 technology demonstrator, was fabricated on TSMC's 6nm process and runs Meta's Llama 3.1 8B model, with a second chip, HC2, targeting models of roughly 20 billion parameters. AMD said the acquisition strengthens its long-term AI roadmap with differentiated inference technology and engineering talent, and that it plans to integrate the technology into system-level products alongside AMD Instinct GPUs, EPYC CPUs, Helios rackscale solutions and ROCm software. Taalas will join AMD under senior vice-president of AI Vamsi Boppana. The deal is AMD's latest inference-focused acquisition, following MK1 and Mext, and reflects AMD's continued investment in Canadian semiconductor and AI talent. The transaction remains subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.
