Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals Inc. (SMMI) acquired Compass Minerals Wynyard Inc., an operating sulphate of potash production facility in Wynyard, Saskatchewan, from Compass Minerals International Inc. The transaction closed on March 1, 2026, after being announced on February 27, 2026. The Wynyard facility has operated since 1984 under the original Big Quill name and produces sulphate of potash, a premium fertilizer used on sensitive crops and high-salinity fields, for agricultural and industrial customers across North America. Under SMMI ownership, the facility now operates as Saskatchewan Mining and Minerals (Big Quill) Inc. and forms part of an integrated sulphate production platform, drawing on sodium sulphate inputs sourced from SMMI's long-standing operations near Chaplin, Saskatchewan. SMMI has produced sodium sulphate near Chaplin since the 1940s, originally as a Crown corporation before becoming privately owned. According to the company, the acquisition doubles its business footprint and accelerates entry into the sulphate of potash market by providing an established operating base in the province. The deal also returns ownership and operational control of the facility to Saskatchewan from the United States. SMMI has indicated its next phase includes the planned construction of a 50,000 to 100,000 tonne sulphate of potash production facility at its Chaplin site to strengthen long-term supply capability.
