SOCAN acquires CMRRA from SoundExchange

On September 1, 2026, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN) completed its acquisition of the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency (CMRRA) from SoundExchange. The transaction was first announced on July 29, 2026, and closed following the satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.

SOCAN is Canada's largest member-owned music rights organization, representing nearly 200,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers. CMRRA, founded in 1975, represents the vast majority of music publishers doing business in Canada and has more than 50 years of experience licensing reproduction rights and administering royalties for musical works. SoundExchange, a Washington, D.C.-based neighbouring rights organization, had owned CMRRA since 2017, when it made its first entry into reproduction rights.

The acquisition brings together SOCAN's longstanding leadership in performing rights administration and advocacy with CMRRA's specialized expertise in reproduction rights. The combination is intended to provide a more streamlined rights management experience in Canada while maintaining the reproduction rights services relied upon by SOCAN members and CMRRA clients. According to the parties, CMRRA clients will continue to receive the same services from the same team.
