CDPQ acquires 80 percent stake in a solar plant in Japan

CDPQ, a leading global investment group, recently completed the acquisition of an 80 percent interest in a solar power generation facility in Japan, in partnership with Shizen Energy Inc. (Shizen Energy), a portfolio company of CDPQ. The Inuyama project, which has just commenced operations, boasts a solar power generation capacity of 31 MW, sufficient to supply electricity to approximately 7,850 households. Situated in Aichi prefecture, this solar plant represents CDPQ's inaugural co-investment with Shizen Energy, following a JPY 50 billion (CAD 460 million) co-investment framework established last year. At that time, CDPQ had invested JPY 20 billion (CAD 186 million) in Shizen Energy to foster its expansion. Both entities are actively seeking additional co-investment opportunities under this agreement. Emmanuel Jaclot, CDPQ's Executive Vice-President and Head of Infrastructure, highlighted the strategic importance of Japan in Asia's decarbonization efforts and expressed enthusiasm about the joint venture with Shizen Energy in the renewable energy sector. Oliver Senter, Executive Officer of Shizen Energy, emphasized the project's significance as the first co-investment venture between the two companies, noting Shizen Energy's comprehensive involvement in the project's development, construction, and operation. Senter also mentioned Shizen Energy's ambitious goal to execute around 3 GW of renewable energy projects in Japan within the next three to five years.
