Laura Klemmer was named vice president
James Fyfe is set to take on the presidency of the Law Society of Saskatchewan in the coming year, working alongside newly appointed vice president Laura Klemmer.
James Fyfe
Fyfe joined the Law Society as bencher in 2021 and was elected vice president last year. He sat on the Canadian Bar Association’s federal courts bench and was on the bar liaison committee in addition to being part of the ethics, conduct investigation, discipline policy, competency, and the future of legal services committees.
He was also part of the Aboriginal Law South (Saskatchewan) section. He took silk in 2022 and received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee Medal in 2023.
Fyfe worked with the Saskatchewan justice ministry’s constitutional law branch and was a Crown prosecutor in Regina.
He lectures on the “Charter of Rights and Freedoms” at the University of Regina and has presented on constitutional law. He presided over the board of the Autism Resource Centre in Regina. Moreover, he was a volunteer with the Regina Open Door Society’s welcoming committee for refugees.
He succeeds outgoing president Adam Touet.
Laura Klemmer
Klemmer is an MLT Aikins LLP counsel focusing on corporate and commercial law. She was elected as a Law Society of Saskatchewan bencher in 2023.
Prior to joining MLT Atkins, she worked in-house for 16 years at Farm Credit Canada, where she was director of corporate legal services. She spearheaded a team tackling corporate and operational matters llike secured lending, risk management, Crown governance, contracts, procurement, employment, litigation management, marketing, and communications.
Klemmer was a Regina Bar Association director and was on the council of the Canadian Bar Association’s Saskatchewan branch. She also sits on the board of SOFIA House, a second-stage shelter helping to shield women and children who experienced intimate partner violence.
She was called to the Saskatchewan Bar in 2009 and holds an LLB from the University of Windsor as well as a bachelor of arts (honours) in applied economics from Queen’s University. She obtained a JD from the University of Detroit Mercy.
The Law Society’s board (benchers) named Klemmer to the role.
