She was the organization’s director of policy and strategic initiatives
The Law Society of Manitoba has appointed its director of policy and strategic initiatives, Alissa Schacter, as its new deputy chief executive.
Schacter commenced in the role on January 5. She has worked with the Law Society for over a decade.
She served as the organization’s equity officer and policy counsel from January 2018 to May 2024. In this role, she collaborated with the Indigenous advisory committee and spearheaded a team that established mandatory Indigenous intercultural awareness and competency training for all practising Manitoba lawyers (The Path). The team also launched the 2022 Part-Time Practising Fees Pilot Program.
Schacter became policy and strategic initiatives director in May 2024, according to LinkedIn. She worked with the Law Society of Manitoba’s CEO, Leah Kosokowsky, on the “Ours to Protect” national rule of law campaign, which was rolled out in November 2025. The campaign concentrates on the importance of the rule of law, highlighting the elements of equality, transparency, independence, and accountability.
Moreover, Schacter collaborated with Kosokowsky on progressing the community- co-designed Access to Justice initiative. Schacter also contributed to the development of the organization’s 2025–2028 strategic plan, the five primary goals of which are competence; access; public and stakeholder confidence; equity, diversity, and inclusion; and well-being.
Under the plan, the Law Society sought to provide resources and guidance on emerging issues, expand access to legal support and services for Manitobans with low income and hailing from northern and rural communities, promote confidence in the organization, bolster the number of Indigenous and racialized lawyers in the province, and provide a safe space for those dealing with mental health concerns.
The Law Society of Manitoba’s leadership team also includes chief financial officer Sandra Alleyne; practice, ethics and equity advisor Noelia Bernardo, director Chris Donaldson (complaints resolution), director Richard Porcher (admissions and membership), director Joan Holmstrom (competence), director Eileen Derksen (continuing professional development), director Tana Christianson (professional liability claims fund), and director Kathy Levacque (audit).
