Michael Dyck, who leads Stikeman Elliott LLP’s real estate and banking and finance groups in Calgary, has been appointed managing partner of the firm’s Calgary office.

He succeeds Chrysten Perry. Dyck brings leadership experience from serving as Alberta chair of the American College of Mortgage Attorneys, of which he is a Fellow.

In his practice, Dyck has handled the acquisitions and dispositions of multi-tenant office complexes, industrial properties and development sites, construction loans, acquisition loans, leasehold financings and mortgage bond financings, office, industrial and retail leases, long-term ground leases, and ownership arrangements including co-ownerships and limited partnerships. He has also worked on general corporate financings, acquisition financings, subordinate financings, debt offerings, and the Canadian aspects of cross-border financings.

His clients have included purchasers and vendors, lenders and borrowers, landlords and tenants, owners and contractors, and issuers. He has advised on matters across the real estate and oil and gas industries.

Dyck assisted Ricochet Oil Inc. with its $400 million sale to a privately held purchaser. He also advised Gran Tierra Energy Inc. as it acquired i3 Energy plc for ~US$225 million.

He acted as Canadian counsel to JPMorgan and other lenders on Carlyle Group and GIC’s €10.1 billion acquisition of AkzoNobel’s Specialty Chemicals business. He also helped Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan Board subsidiary Baybridge Seniors Housing Trust with the acquisition and financing of a 50 percent stake in a portfolio of seven seniors housing facilities in Alberta; the transaction included entrance into arrangements on future developments and acquisitions of seniors housing facilities.

Dyck is part of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, and the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties’ Calgary chapter. He sits on the board of Mortgage Loans Association of Alberta’s Calgary chapter as an executive member.

He is ranked by Lexpert as a consistently recommended lawyer in banking and financial institutions, real estate – property development, and real estate – commercial leasing.

Dyck’s predecessor Perry will remain with the firm, focusing on her energy law practice.
