Osler has appointed Mat Brechtel as an intellectual property partner in its Vancouver office.

Brechtel makes the move from Seastone IP. He has worked with international brands, technology companies, and major public institutions.

He is an expert in intellectual property disputes and multi-jurisdictional litigation. He has defended intellectual property rights in confidential information, trademarks, copyrights, software, and designs.

Brechtel has advised on the online use of IP assets and tackled novel use, software and app copyright matters, streaming, and emerging platform issues. He has represented clients securing evidence in Canada for use in global legal proceedings and acted for clients enforcing their IP rights in multiple jurisdictions at once.

He has obtained and enforced pre-judgment remedies such as injunctive relief, asset freezing orders, civil search warrants, and discovery and disclosure orders for clients. He has appeared before the Federal Courts, the British Columbia, Alberta, and Ontario Courts, and Trademarks Opposition Board in contentious proceedings; he has appeared in arbitrations as well.

Brechtel has also handled matters related to advertising and marketing, agribusiness, and artificial intelligence. His clients have included Farmobile Canada, NCS Multistage, and Garfinkel Publications dba Native Northwest.

“Mat is highly regarded in the industry and his extensive experience in all areas of IP law will be invaluable to our clients and provides an exciting opportunity to service them in Western Canada,” said Brad White, who chairs Osler’s national intellectual property department, in a statement.

Vancouver managing partner Mark Longo added that Brechtel’s skillset would complement two of its practice groups.

“Mat’s expertise and many talents will support the efforts of the Vancouver office to further build full-service capabilities in the British Columbia market. Mat’s capabilities will be highly complementary to the firm’s national emerging and high growth companies group and technology group, and will enable Osler to better serve our technology company clients in Western Canada,” Longo said.
