Sean Fraser, Canada’s justice minister and attorney general and minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, has announced the appointment of Gary G. Demeulenaere as a judge of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown.
According to a news release from Canada’s justice department, Demeulenaere has replaced Justice Nancy L. Key in Charlottetown, who resigned as of Aug. 31, 2025.
“I wish Justice Demeulenaere every success as he takes on his new role,” Fraser said in the news release. “I am confident he will serve the people of Prince Edward Island well as a member of the Supreme Court of Prince Edward Island.”
Demeulenaere most recently worked as a partner at Stewart McKelvey in Charlottetown. His practice has focused on litigation, with an emphasis on civil, criminal, and regulatory matters. He has appeared at all court levels in the province and before various tribunals.

Born and raised on a family farm in Grandview, Prince Edward Island, Demeulenaere is a first-generation Canadian to Belgian parents. He has 10 siblings.
He obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Prince Edward Island in 1998 and his law degree from the University of New Brunswick in 2004. He earned admission to the Prince Edward Island bar in 2005.
Demeulenaere articled and practised at Cox Hanson O’Reilly Matheson. He then joined Stewart McKelvey in Charlottetown in 2007 and became a partner at the firm in 2013.
In 2017, he took a break from private practice to serve as director of legal and policy services at the province’s Department of Justice and Public Safety.
In 2019, Demeulenaere returned to Stewart McKelvey and rejoined the firm’s partnership. He received a King’s Counsel designation in 2020.
He has sat on the discipline and rules committees of the Law Society of Prince Edward Island.
Demeulenaere’s community involvement has spanned organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Immigrant and Refugee Services Association PEI, and Inclusions East. He has also volunteered as a soccer coach.
He resides in Stratford with his wife, with whom he has four children.
