The former Ontario Energy Board senior counsel will work with the business law group
Ljuba Djurdjevic has joined McCarthy Tétrault’s Toronto office as a counsel working with the business law group.
She makes the move from the Ontario Energy Board, where she was senior counsel. She has worked in the energy and public sectors for over 25 years and is an expert in regulatory law, strategic policy development and related risk management and mitigation strategies.
Djurdjevic concentrates on energy, regulatory and public sector law, particularly matters involving complex regulatory frameworks and energy initiatives. She has tackled Ontario electricity market issues, including the IESO Market Renewal Program and IESO Market Rules, and worked on corporate-commercial, licensing, and compliance matters.
She tackled an application by a group of generator market participants to revoke Market Rule Amendments to implement MRP, according to McCarthy Tétrault. She also worked on an application by demand-response market participants to revoke Market Rule Amendment implementing the Transitional Capacity Auction.
While working with the OEB, Djurdjevic handled challenges from market participants and was involved in proceedings related to rate cases, construction and infrastructure, and market design. She served as OEB staff counsel on an electricity distributor’s application for incremental capital investments (ICM) costing over $60m and OEB Distribution System Code exemptions; she was also OEB counsel on Ontario’s Cap & Trade program applications.
She worked on applications for major new electricity transmission projects like Waasigan LTC and expropriation. She also handled a lengthy ICM application by a distributor regarding a proposed Smart Grid project costing over $32m.
Prior to her stint with the Ontario Energy Board, Djurdjevic held roles at Toronto Hydro and Hydro One, per LinkedIn.
“Ljuba’s arrival further bolsters our pre-eminent energy group and provides additional bench strength in our ability to serve clients in this increasingly complex sector. Her deep regulatory knowledge and strategic approach to project development, licensing and compliance matters make her a tremendous addition to our group,” said Eva Bellissimo, McCarthy Tétrault’s business law practice group leader, in a statement.
