Global firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe has lured a 37-strong team from competitor Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, including 10 partners.

According to Orrick, debt market intelligence provider 9fin ranked the team as the top chief legal officer arranger counsel by volume in the UK; the team ranks second in the US. The team was involved with the first European CLO 2.0 transactions.

The move weaves the team’s CLO expertise with Orrick’s US private credit practice and its securitization teams, strengthening the firm’s debt finance law offering.

“The addition of this world-class team positions our firm uniquely to advise our private credit and banking clients as they innovate on private debt solutions. It advances multiple strategic priorities, including growing our London office and scaling our finance practice with a team of remarkable quality,” Orrick chair Mitch Zuklie said in a statement.

The firm’s new partners are as follows:

London:

  • David Quirolo
  • Daniel Tobias
  • Claire Puddicombe
  • Alex Collins

Charlotte:

  • Joe Beach
  • Nate Spanheimer
  • Skyler Walker
  • Doug Arborio

Washington D.C.

  • Gregg Jubin
  • Mike Gonzalez

Six lawyers join the D.C. office, 3 join the New York office, and 14 join the London team along with two trainees.

“One of the most significant U.S. market trends is the accelerating convergence of banks and private credit funds, and our combined platform is uniquely positioned to help parties execute legal, business and regulatory strategies to address this opportunity,” Spanheimer said.

Quirolo added that it was “Ian exceptionally dynamic moment for financial market regulation and a time when sophisticated financial institutions need a strategic partner to innovate.”

With the influx of talent, Orrick also expanded its presence in the US to Charlotte, North Carolina this week. The new office will be staffed with 15 lawyers, and it is the firm’s fifth branch on the US east coast.

In July, Orrick opened an office in Miami.
