Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP has announced the appointment of Timothy St. John Ellam as senior counsel in the litigation and dispute resolution group, based in the firm’s offices in Calgary and London, UK.

“We are delighted to welcome a litigator as accomplished as Tim Ellam,” said Jodi Katz, Fasken’s London managing partner, in a news release.

Ellam joins from McCarthy Tétrault LLP. With nearly four decades of experience, he is an international arbitration and litigation counsel focusing on international arbitration in Canada and the UK, with an emphasis on energy and intellectual property matters.

“Fasken’s clients will benefit immensely from Tim Ellam’s exceptional experience in representing companies in a wide range of complex, high‑stakes proceedings,” said Alex Kotkas, Fasken’s Alberta managing partner, in the news release. “His arrival further reinforces our firm’s leading position in the energy sector.”

Ellam has handled complex litigation and arbitration proceedings in Canada and the UK. His practice has encompassed domestic and international arbitration involving communications, technology, and energy.

In the IP realm, his experience has covered patent, copyright, and trademark litigation involving infringement, injunctions, cross-border matters, licensing, trade secrets, technology, ecommerce, and internet law.

In London, Ellam has dealt with international arbitration matters and litigation before the High Court of Justice (Commercial Court).

“Tim brings an extraordinary combination of international arbitration expertise, deep sector knowledge, and decades of experience acting in high-profile disputes across multiple jurisdictions,” Katz said in Fasken’s news release. “His outstanding background in both the UK and Canada strengthens our ability to support clients facing complex cross-border matters.”

In 2014, Ellam received a King’s Counsel honour. In 2005, the International Bar Association (IBA) and the College of Law of England and Wales designated him as an IBA fellow in international legal practice.

He is also a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a member of the North American Council of the London Court of International Arbitration.

“After retiring from my previous firm, I am very pleased to be joining Fasken in their London and Calgary offices as senior counsel,” Ellam said in a LinkedIn post. “I look forward to seeing many of you at various arbitration events!”
