Cumming works on corporate law and M&A, while O’Doherty focuses on finance
McCarthy Tétrault LLP has announced the elevation of Matthew Cumming, a lawyer focusing on corporate law and mergers and acquisitions, and of Richard O’Doherty, a finance lawyer, as co-leaders of the firm’s national business law practice group.

Eva Bellissimo, who led the business law group, will keep practising actively and co‑leading the firm’s global metals and mining group. Bellissimo will work closely with Cumming and O’Doherty in supporting the business law group’s strategic direction.
“Eva’s leadership has played an important part in the success of our Business Law Group, and we are grateful for the experience she brings to our national practice,” O’Doherty said.
McCarthy Tétrault’s business law group spans offices across Canada, in New York, US, and in London, UK. Lawyers in the practice group have advised on domestic and cross‑border transactions across key industries.
Matthew Cumming
In its news release, the firm shared that Cumming has brought together cross-disciplinary teams to support client objectives and coordinate effective solutions.
Based in New York, he will continue serving as the firm’s New York managing partner. He focuses exclusively on Canadian law.
Cumming has assisted Canadian and international corporations, private equity sponsors, and institutional investors with complex public and private, domestic and cross-border transactions.
The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory has listed him as repeatedly recommended in corporate commercial law, as well as consistently recommended in the corporate mid-market, corporate finance and securities, M&A, and private equity areas.
Lexpert has included Cumming in publications about finance, M&A, infrastructure, and cross-border lawyers.
He joined the Ontario bar in 2003 and the New York bar in 2005.
Richard O’Doherty
Based in Montréal, O’Doherty has handled regulatory matters and financing transactions.
His client base has included domestic and international corporations, investors, governmental organizations, banks, pension funds, and other financial institutions. His experience has spanned the renewable energy, natural resources, transportation, agribusiness, and infrastructure sectors.
The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory has listed O’Doherty as most frequently recommended in banking, financial institutions, and project finance, as well as consistently recommended in asset-based lending, infrastructure law, and energy (electricity) areas.
Lexpert has included him in publications about energy, finance, M&A, infrastructure, and cross-border lawyers.
