He joins the firm’s Edmonton office
Matt Riskin, formerly of Bennett Jones, has commenced with McLennan Ross this week as a partner in its Edmonton office.
He started with the firm on Monday May 4. He practises with McLennan Ross’ health law, commercial litigation, and labour and employment groups.
Over more than a decade, Riskin has tackled negligence claims, regulatory proceedings, administrative proceedings, corporate and commercial disputes, and civil litigation in these areas. He has appeared before all level of court in Alberta and Saskatchewan, arbitrators, administrative tribunals, and professional regulatory bodies, including the College of Physicians and Surgeons.
He has worked on professional negligence and general litigation in the financial services and brokerage sectors. Lexpert ranked Riskin as a leading lawyer in the categories of “medical negligence – represents defendants” and “professional liability.”
Riskin spent nearly 12 years at Bennett Jones, where he made partner in March 2024. He had started with the firm in May 2012 as a summer law student, according to LinkedIn.
Before going into law, he worked in management consulting, commodities trading, and portfolio management. He was a portfolio manager at Direct Energy, a senior management consultant at Bearingpoint, and a forecasting analyst at Solution 105 Consulting Ltd. At Direct Energy, he oversaw electricity forecasting and procurement for a portfolio of residential and small commercial retail power consumers; at Bearingpoint, he handled business process design and improvement as well as project management.
Riskin was called to the Alberta bar in 2015 after obtaining his J.D. from the University of Alberta in 2014.
In February, McLennan Ross welcomed its first female managing partner in Calgary partner Joyce Mitchell. The firm also built on its executive committee with the addition of Pat Haughian and Erin Crosley.
McLennan Ross also bolstered its Edmonton office by bringing in Cody Van de Veen as a lawyer concentrating on insurance defence and commercial litigation.
