Karen Rose was the former PEI Information and Privacy Commissioner
Prince Edward Island has appointed Karen Rose as acting prothonotary of the Court of Appeal and of the Supreme Court, effective July 27.
Rose previously served as PEI Information and Privacy Commissioner. Until the ongoing selection process to fill the permanent position has wrapped up, Rose will take the place of her predecessor, Krista J. MacKay, who has been appointed a judge at the Provincial Court of PEI.
Bloyce Thompson, PEI Minister of Justice and Public Safety, expressed confidence that Rose’s professionalism, skills, experience and knowledge would benefit the courts and would help her fulfill her responsibilities in her role as chief legal officer of the Court of Appeal and of the Supreme Court.
The prothonotary’s functions include mediating small claims cases, conducting garnishee hearings and criminal show-cause hearings, executing conveyances and mortgages, issuing subpoenas, performing civil wedding ceremonies, acting as the registrar of the courts and working with the courts’ rules committee.
The prothonotary’s role is meant to promote effective and efficient court operations and administration of justice.
