Troy Lehman shares how Oatley Vigmond wins tough cases and leads in personal injury law
When advocating for the most seriously injured Canadians, few firms stand taller than Oatley Vigmond LLP. Recently named one of Canadian Lawyer’s Top Personal Injury Boutiques for 2025, the firm continues to set the bar in trial advocacy and compassionate representation.
In a new Canadian Lawyer TV interview, partner Troy Lehman reflected on what this recognition means and what fuels the firm’s ongoing success. “To be recognized by your peers as one of the top personal injury boutiques in Canada is a huge honour,” Lehman said. “It’s a product of hard work, not resting on the firm’s successes, and taking cases to trial.”
Trial work is more than a point of pride; it’s a strategic advantage. “You don’t earn respect in this industry from insurers, from defence lawyers, or from judges without taking cases to trial – and even some hard ones,” Lehman noted. “Insurers know that Oatley Vigmond is a firm that won’t back down, even in hard cases.”
Lehman shared one powerful example: the precedent-setting Little v. Sinton case, involving a child with a significant brain injury. “We ultimately obtained a verdict of over $7 million – 14 times higher than what the defence offered,” he recalled. “That result gave her enough money to live independently. We made a difference in a kid’s life in such a big way.”
The firm’s ability to take on challenging, high-stakes cases, such as complex product liability or medical malpractice matters, is bolstered by its deep resources and fearless commitment to preparation. “We have the resources to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars preparing for trial, if necessary,” said Lehman. “That kind of investment matters when the stakes are this high.”
Oatley Vigmond’s leadership is no accident, Lehman explained. “We think about leadership. We meet about it. We bring in leadership consultants to think hard about what good leaders do,” he said. “Integrity, excellence, innovation, compassion, and leadership – those are our core values.”
