New judicial appointee's legal work has covered family law, wills and estates, real estate
The Alberta government has announced Syra Dhaliwal’s appointment as a part-time justice of the peace in the Alberta Court of Justice in Calgary as of June 30.
According to Alberta’s news release, with this addition, the provincial government has 43 justices of the peace and has made 33 judicial appointments since June 2023.
“The Alberta Court of Justice congratulates Ms. Dhaliwal on her appointment as a justice of the peace,” said James Hunter, chief justice of the Alberta Court of Justice, in the news release. “I am confident that her background and experience will serve her well.”
“I am confident Ms. Dhaliwal will serve Albertans well,” echoed Mickey Amery, Alberta’s justice minister and attorney general, in the news release. “I welcome her to the Alberta Court of Justice for Calgary and congratulate her on this new role.”
Most recently, Dhaliwal worked as a lawyer at Amery Law in Calgary, where her practice areas included personal injury and family law, according to her profile on Amery Law’s website. Since 2018, her legal practice in Calgary has also covered civil litigation, wills and estates, and real estate.
“Appointing judiciary to our courts continues to be a priority as we strive to ensure Albertans have access to an efficient justice system that works better and faster,” Mickey Amery said.
“Each court appointment is a step towards ensuring timely and effective access to justice for Albertans,” Hunter added in Alberta’s news release.

Dhaliwal earned her BA in history from the University of British Columbia in 2004. In 2008, she obtained her LLB from the University of Manchester in the UK and began working as a legal advocate for the Community Legal Assistance Society’s mental health law program in Vancouver.
She joined the Alberta bar in September 2012 and then practised law in the private sector. She studied the mediation of divorce and family disputes at the Legal Education Society of Alberta in November 2013.
She worked as an associate at Masuch Law LLP in Calgary from September 2012 to December 2015 and as a partner at Chestermere Law LLP in Chestermere from January 2016 to March 2018.
