Many people are drawn to studying law because of the high average salary for a lawyer. However, even as law students and lawyers are reminded that it's not always about the money, those salaries and hourly rates still play a big role in attracting people to the profession.

In this article, we'll discuss the average salary of lawyers in Canada based on roles and areas of expertise. While this article is primarily for law students, it's also useful for practising lawyers who want to know more about where compensation levels stand across the profession.

Average salary for a lawyer in Canada

The average salary for a lawyer in Canada is roughly at $150,000, but several factors affect that figure. As such, this amount may drop as low as $95,000 for first-year lawyers or go as high as $200,000 depending on role and experience. These amounts are based on our complete Canadian Legal Salaries report.

Below, we will discuss average lawyer salaries by role, and the factors legal professionals should consider before they start running their own numbers.

Factors in calculating actual and average salary for a lawyer

Before we look at the average salary for a lawyer across Canada, it helps to consider the different factors that affect the actual figure that clients pay lawyers. Here's a rundown:

  • experience level and role, especially for corporate lawyers and those in private practice
  • region and city differences, which are also related to the location's cost of living
  • practice area demand, especially when combined with firm economics and individual role
  • work arrangement and flexibility (i.e., in-person, online, or hybrid)
  • keeping up with inflation, which is also tied to where the lawyer practices
  • other factors, such as competition in the field, mobility, and pay negotiations

Starting salary for new lawyers

Average salary: $94,000-$95,000

Starting pay for lawyers in Canada sits in a six‑figure range once benefits and bonuses are included, and the base number on its own is still high compared with many other fields. However, when this national data is averaged across major cities, the picture is very similar.

Fresh lawyers must start somewhere else, and the average starting salary for a lawyer in Canada may range from $94,000 to $95,000. According to our Canadian Legal Salaries report, a first-year lawyer's average salary across five cities (Calgary, Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa, and Vancouver) is $94,375. The report says that the salary of first-year lawyers based on roles is $95,750 on average.

On top of this low salary – which is still strong compared with many other professions – new lawyers also weigh other factors when it comes to job satisfaction. As an analysis by Canadian Lawyer notes, flexibility often is the key for Millennial and Gen Z lawyers, with many treating it as the top priority for job satisfaction.

When talking about the starting salary for lawyers in Canada, it also helps to see it not just as a single number, but as a starting point shaped by city, cost of living, and the wider talent market in the legal field.

Associate lawyers

Average salary: $110,000-$115,000

Associate lawyers start earning six figures once they move past their first few years of practice. According to the 2025 survey by the National Association for Law Placement (NALP), the median salary of an associate in a Canadian law firm is at $110,000 to $115,000. This amount is for those who are called to the bar in 2025, with increasing amounts for the previous years.

Firm size also plays a role when it comes to first-year associate lawyers. The same survey found that law firms with around 100 to 300 lawyers are the only ones that reach $115,000 as their average salary for first-year associate lawyers, while the rest stay around the $110,000 average.

However, mid‑level associates earn well above entry‑level pay across Canada. Our full Canadian Legal Salaries report shows that lawyers with two to three years' experience have a median salary of $126,500 (compared to the average $110,000).

Associate lawyers can even earn more than some in‑house counsel with longer résumés. The report states that in‑house counsel or associate general counsel with over 10 years' experience have a median salary of $158,000, which is lower than the $178,250 median for four‑ to nine‑year firm lawyers.

This shows how law firm associate roles can match or exceed some senior in‑house pay, especially in busy firms that reward high billable hours.

Law firm partners

Average salary: $178,000

Senior lawyers who are not yet partners already earn high six-figure salaries, and it all rests on the years of experience, aside from the other factors. Our Canadian Legal Salaries report shows a range of $126,500 to $230,000 for lawyers with two to three, four to nine, and 10 or more years' experience, resulting in a $178,000 average salary for lawyers based on experience.

To be sure, partners in some practice areas earn well above these benchmarks. For instance, lawyers at personal injury firms, whose compensation may tie directly to settlements, can earn significantly more than the average salary for a lawyer.

In-house counsel

Average salary: $136,500

In-house counsel compensation is one of the most nuanced areas in our Canadian Legal Salaries report, with years of experience creating large differences between lawyers. Still, even the lower‑end salaries in these roles are high compared with many other lawyer roles, with $94,250 at the 25th percentile for lawyers with up to three years' experience. As they say, it's "not that bad" for in-house lawyers.

In another salary report by Counselwell on in-house counsel in 2024, 70 percent of the lawyers surveyed said that they received reasonable pay, while 40 percent said they would definitely leave their current roles if another position promised higher pay.

But there seem to be brighter days for Canadian in-house counsels. In the same salary report, median base salary for in‑house counsel rose, particularly in Ontario, Alberta, and Québec.

General counsel

Average salary: $195,000

General counsel in Canada has slightly higher average salaries than in-house counsel. You can read more about these nuances in our Canadian Legal Salaries report, which says that a general counsel's average salary is at:

  • $195,750 if based on role and responsibilities
  • $196,112 if based on the average of the five major cities

The average figures dip slightly for associate general counsel, which is at $175,614 average salary across the five Canadian major cities. These differences mainly hinge on the scope of each role and the level of responsibility involved.

Average salary for a lawyer in Canada: Going beyond the numbers

The average salary for a lawyer in Canada tells only part of the story; pay shifts with city, experience, and role, and it also reacts to inflation and living costs. For instance, when more lawyers crowd into certain cities or practice areas, salaries and fees respond, sometimes in uneven ways.

Law students and junior lawyers are entering a market that is still competitive but is much more open about pay and work‑life balance. For anyone considering a legal career, these salary trends are a reminder to balance passion for the law with a realistic view of the numbers.
