Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP has announced the appointment of Brad Newby – whom the firm described as a well-recognized and experienced lawyer within the BC business community – as managing partner of the firm’s Vancouver office as of Jan. 1.

“We are delighted to have Brad at the helm to help guide our Osler Vancouver team into the future,” said Maureen Killoran, Osler’s national co-chair, in a media release.

While serving in his new role, Newby will continue practising full-time and supporting his clients.

The firm’s media release provides more information regarding Newby’s practice. He has handled various business transactions and situations, acquisitions, divestitures, joint ventures, financings, strategic alliances, leveraged buyouts, fiduciary obligations, and shareholder relations.

His clients have included corporations, private equity firms, family offices, and entrepreneurs. His work has spanned various industries, including food and beverage, retail and consumer products, financial services, and professional services.

“Brad is a nationally recognized, client-focused, energetic and practical problem solver,” Killoran said. “His deep understanding of the British Columbia market across a wide range of industries has made him a favoured corporate advisor to B.C. business leaders and beyond.”

The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory has recognized Newby in the areas of corporate mid-market, corporate commercial law, corporate finance and securities, private equity, and mergers and acquisitions.

According to his LinkedIn page, he worked at Farris LLP in Vancouver before joining Osler in February 2023. Specifically, he served as a partner from February 2005 to February 2023 and as an associate from December 2000 to January 2005.

Before that, he worked as a lawyer at Baker Newby LLP in Abbotsford from September 1995 to May 2000. He earned his law degree from the University of Toronto in 1994.

Newby’s predecessor

Newby has succeeded Mark Longo as Vancouver managing partner. Longo established Osler’s Vancouver office in 2015 and led it as managing partner from its founding to Dec. 31, 2025, when his term concluded.

Longo will keep serving as national co-chair of the firm’s emerging and high-growth companies practice and assisting technology companies with venture capital and growth equity financings, mergers and acquisitions, startup formation, and corporate governance.

“Over the past 10 years, we have grown the Vancouver office rapidly and built a stellar reputation for working on nationally and internationally significant transactions and cases,” Longo said in Osler’s media release. “We have expanded our service offering to many industries and built a full-service office comprised of excellent lawyers and team members.”

“We are grateful to Mark for his incredible leadership and the entrepreneurial spirit he brought to building the Vancouver office,” Killoran said. “He guided the office through transformational growth and he had a material impact on the culture and direction of our firm.”

“In this next chapter, Brad is the right person to lead Osler’s Vancouver office,” Longo added. “His client-centric approach and outstanding leadership qualities will build on the growth of our office and ensure its continued success.”
