Miller Thomson has announced the addition of Kathryn Walker, Peter Wong, and Amit Ummat to its Toronto and Vancouver branches.

Walker and Wong commenced with the firm on July 7 and July 21, respectively, while Ummat started this week. Walker and Ummat joined the partnership, while Wong is a counsel.

Jay Hoffman, Miller Thomson’s national business law group chair, highlighted Walker, Wong, and Ummat’s contribution to the firm’s planning, wealth management, and dispute resolution offerings. All three will be part of the firm’s tax group.

“This expansion reflects our ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of clients facing increasingly complex tax challenges,” Hoffman said in a statement.

Walker works with the corporate tax group in Miller Thomson’s Toronto office. She has tackled domestic and cross-border income tax matters, particularly strategic tax planning for corporations and financial institutions. Moreover, she has handled complex debt restructuring and cryptocurrency taxation transactions.

She is part of the Law Society of Ontario, the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Ontario Bar Association, the Canadian Bar Association, and the International Fiscal Association.

Wong practises with the private client services group in Vancouver. He has handled Canadian income tax matters, especially those involving estate planning, wealth management, corporate reorganizations, and cross-border investment; he has also tackled non-resident trust structures, voluntary disclosures, and disputes with the Canada Revenue Agency.

His clients have included high-net-worth individuals and families and those from Hong Kong and China, who he advises in relation to tax-efficient strategies for wealth preservation and repatriation. He is fluent in Cantonese and English.

Ummat works with the tax disputes resolution and commodity taxes group in Miller Thomson’s Toronto office. He specializes in income tax and GST/HST litigation and has handled audits, negotiations with tax authorities, and dispute resolution strategies.

He has acted for clients at all levels of court in Canada and has worked on matters concerning international tax controversy.
