McCarthy Tétrault has welcomed charities and non-profits expert Troy McEachren to its tax group in Montréal.

The Lexpert-ranked lawyer has worked with charities, foundations, and other tax-exempt organizations on matters involving governance, fiduciary obligations, and compliance with complex tax regulations. His addition expands the firm’s private wealth, estates and trusts offering.

McEachren has advised high net worth individuals, families, and trustees on issues related to succession planning, cross-border tax, and charitable giving. He has also guided private clients, businesses, investment groups, trust companies, philanthropists, and institutional and individual trustees and fiduciaries.

He is a Trusts and Estates Practitioner and is fluent in English and French.

“Troy brings exceptional expertise in the charitable and tax-exempt space, with a reputation for strategic insight and technical excellence. His arrival deepens our ability to support philanthropic organizations with governance, compliance, and tax planning advice in Quebec and nationally,” said Raj Juneja, co-head of McCarthy Tétrault’s national tax group, in a statement. “Troy’s addition also strengthens our private wealth offering in Quebec, enhancing our ability to advise high-net-worth individuals, family offices, and trustees on complex trusts, estates, and cross-border planning.”

Prior to making the jump to McCarthy Tétrault, McEachren spent over 11 years at Miller Thomson LLP, where he was a partner in the taxation and estate planning practices. He was also with Heenan Blaikie from 1997 to 2014 and made partner there, per LinkedIn.

He is part of the Canadian Tax Foundation, the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, and the Canadian Association of Gift Planners. He was called to the Barreau du Québec in 1999.

McEachren earned his BCL/LLB at McGill University.

In June, Marc-Philippe Gagnon joined McCarthy Tétrault’s tax group in Montréal as partner. Mergers and acquisitions expert Jack Schroder also commenced with the business law group in Calgary. Last month, former Ontario Energy Board senior counsel Ljuba Djurdjevic started with McCarthy Tétrault as a counsel in the business law group.
